G'day guys, have noticed that my stone-age ball mouse is sometimes a little slow to react when I'm instinctive shooting (often I end up dead because of it)

Would you recommend that I buy a laser mouse? Because they're more responsive aren't they?

To Stewy

I use a USB optical Microsoft IntelliMouse mouse. My opinion is wireless have a delay and can mean the difference between being shot and beating someone to the mark so I always have corded products for FPS.

OK while I'm at it some of the Optical mouses are cheap and do the job but really your paying for what you get so if you wish it to last consider brand names and quality.

Also allot of optical mouses come with USB/PS2 so if you don't have USB ports then using the UBS and plugging it into the PS2 adaptor can cause problems as there less reliable I have found.

Optical mice, using a CMOS sensor (typically) and an LED, are far more accurate and responsive than a ball mouse.

They also have a very unique "feel" when used.

I went optical two years ago, and I would never go back. Wireless, I don't really have a desire/need for, but that old ball is long dead. Mind you, I used to kill two ball mice a year due to wear and tear, and my MS cheapo optical has got 20+ months on it and is still going strong.

Go with the optical mouse mate. No wear and tear so nothing wears out and no ball means not having to keep cleaning the thing.

I can't recommend going wireless on the mouse tho. I bought a top of the range Logitech wireless keyboard and mouse setup. The keyboard is great but the mouse had more lag, in games, than a very laggy thing. Went back to my old Logitech PS/2 optical.

So do I, and I have no problems with it over the last year, it works great for FPS games. I see no lag with it at all. If you are going to let the batteries run out until they are dead then yes you will find lag I'm sure of it, but once my Logitech mouse batteries get too low the computer will tell me.

Also cables always get caught up with each other and, if like me, you are forever pulling at your wires to get more slack (which can be terribly annoying when in a game/match) then the reason to go wireless is even higher.

So go wireless optical. It's the only way to go.

when unreal tournament came out almost 4 years ago i paid a fortune to buy a logitech optical mouse it helped in my gaming big time.

almost 4 years later and countless pc builds and games the only thing i havent changed is my optical mouse, with all the button mashing ive done it still runs sweet.

i can safely say it was the best pc purchase i ever made

I have one of those IBM Optical Navigator mice. The black ones with the cobalt blue LED under the mouse wheel. I've been very happy with it and it's most certainly worlds above most ball mice.

I think the biggest thing you can say for optical mice is that you get much better consistancy. You can start relying on it to move accurately without all your desk-fur clogging up the insides.

I also tried Microsoft's Intellimouse Explorer, their wireless/optical mouse, and didn't like it very much. It was too heavy for gaming and didn't always move as expected.

I've recently bought the MS Intellimouse Optical. My old mouse was starting to really annoy me and I've been happy with this new optical one since the day I got it. I defiantly recommend an optical mouse - especially for gaming.

I use a cordless laser mouse (logtech) has a scroll witch helps with zooming with the aim. The only problem i have had with it was i was in a middle of a shot out in the ally i walked down the stairs towards the garage and a enemy soilder poped out from the side i went to shot and nothing happened (my mouse was out of battery juice :stupid: )

While more fluid, groundless mice have a sort of "floaty" feel to them, which is hard starting out, and useless until you get used to the new tilt. Once you do, they arent really useful for anything more than sniping. If you keep your ball mouse well-serviced, you will recieve performance that is actually better than a detection-based mouse. The real factor comes in the increace in dpi you recieve with the other mouse. It makes long-range, aim-intensive shots very easy. Also, the response times tend to be quicker at long range.

It depends on your style. I'm a classic, in-yo-face kind of guy, so I like to take my microsoft standard 2-button mouse into the fray low weight=fast turns) but when you come down to it, both are essentially the same thing. But you see, that's the problem. Groundless mice are more expensive, and personally I think they're for camping wussies...

...they just dont got balls.
