Ghost Recon does not start

Hi

I purchased Ghost Recon on Steam but it will not start: I get a message saying that "ghostrecon.exe has stopped working". I googled the error message and was lead to a "options.xml" file which I downloaded to no avail.

Please tell me what I shall do in order to fix the problem and play the game. I downloaded it a year ago on Steam and it worked just fine, but this time, after downloading, it doesn't work at all. I'm at loss here.

Here is some additional info listed in the "read before posting"-note:

I run a Lenovo laptop (ideapad U350) with Windows 7. Sound card/video card/DirectX version I do not know. (I seldom use the pc for gaming, but GR is such a cool game). As mentioned above I successfully ran GR a year ago, and that was on this very computer.

I would;-

1) update steam.

2) Update Direct X to latest.

3) Update graphics driver.

4) Make sure you turn off other running programs in background that dont need to be running when you are starting the game up.

5) Do a disk clean and registry clean using a free program such as ccleaner.

6) Defragment the whole hard drive.

7) Then see what happens.

Thanks. I contacted Ubisoft and got some directions. They did not work. Hopefully your tips will. What really bugs me is that the game worked perfectly on this computer a year ago, so this should in principle be fixable.

Does your laptop support 640 x 480 screen resolution?

All GR menus are hard coded in this resolution. Gameplay itself can be set to almost any resolution.

Fix for monitors not supporting 640 x 480;

I read you downloaded an options.xml so make the changes to it and give it a whirl.

Might give this a shot also:

You can switch your screen resolution temporarily to 640 X 480 if you have games or other programs that are set to run at that resolution. To switch, right-click the game or program (on the desktop or on the Start menu), and then click Properties. Click the Compatibility tab, and then select the Run in 640x480 screen resolution check box. Your display reverts to its default resolution when you close the program.

​I gave this a shot by right clicking on my desktop shortcut that launches the game. No ill effects and the setting can be unticked at a later time. Seemed the gameplay was in my usual 1680 x 1050 resolution.
