How do I get DOF

Recommended Posts

I am wondering how I might go about enabling Depth Of Field like in this sceenshot:

http://media.pc.ign.com/media/736/736230/img_3547284.html

I didn't see it in the xml file and wanted to check it out. Is it a final game effect not in the demo? Or is it just a haze/fog effect that looks like DOF because of the angle of the shot?

While downloading the video, I noticed something.

Did someone else notice the DOF (depth of field) in the background in this shot?

Bo, can you confirm that Diesel 6.0/GRAW supports DOF?

There was disscussion about this a while back, i thought it was anisotropic filtering but Bo said that was kindergarten, maybe it's dof than?

Yearh, I remember that conversation, I was therefor hoping that Bo could confirm the DOF since its quite evident in the shot. (unless its some pixelshader trick that makes a DOF-like effect)

Bo's Response:

Yepp confirmed.

I guess we just may see those kinds of effects.

tbh it kind of looks like the edges of some of the edges have had some post-editing. maybe just how i'm viewing but look at the edges of the text boxes, especiallly the map one on the top right - seems blurred all the way round apart from the bottom right of the box, definate sharp jagged line.

check out the top corner HUD lines, they are very blurred but the bottom right one especially is more clear. heh but there again UBI editded some screenshots / added HUD items so you cannot tell what is fact or fiction.

i expect IGN received the screenshots for an exclusive rather than they took them with their own computers, but hey that pure speculation........ ;)

That's what things look like thiers Explosions, and yes it's in the demo.

As of DOF, Bo said that's what they use, yet all I can see is buildings in the distance with super bad textures using LOD.

exactly, it's not DOF.. in this shot at least. the buildings in the background are not in the playable area and have low res textures.

what are you talking about.. it looks to me like the screen shot was resized and compressed.. nothing more..

your ubisoft "post-editing" looks a lot like jpeg artifacting to me.

The definition of depth of field is the amount of distance that a subject will stay in focus; usually refering to photography, film, or video. In a shallow depth of field, there is a small distance in which things remain in focus, while on the contrary, a or deeper depth of field will yeild a larger distance in which an object will remain in focus. In this picture, the depth of field is very shallow with the exposions going off, without the explosions, the dof would be deeper.

Oh, and also, the field of view, as many of you know is the angle at which something is shot. A wide angle shot will have a wide field of view: 85 degrees or more, a normal field of view (which best portrays what the human eye sees without peripheral vision) is about 55 degrees, while a telephoto shot with a narrow field will have an angle somewhere around 30 degrees or even less. In the film, photography, and video world, the ability to change field of view without having to change a lens is having a variable focal length, or in other words, zoom. GRAW must not have zoom, so maybe we need a more wide angle lens for those that the gameplay makes them get nausious from time to time.

AS is so kindergarten? What does that mean? Is this engine sooooo advanced that it is too good for AS? Just wondering.

I'm not going to pick the image apart, but there is no way that is just low res textures on geometry in the background. Low res looks textures in that manner look different than that, it's too uniform. It could just be a skybox with building painted in though and it's just lower res and has a wierd FOV thing going on from that camera angle.

If it is DOF or some other neat pixel shader trick is it in the demo somewhere? Was it added after the demo was done?

I am intrigued because I haven't seen DOF in a retail game before and am really curious to try it out for myself if GRAW has it.... That's all.

I thought some 360 games had it.

Edit: ABout it being a background, look at the map in the top right. That area's playable.

:santa: maybe i know more than you think  hehe who knows? love this game though :g_withgrin:

Indeed, what you take for a (quite exaggerated) DOF effect is more likely an effect of image resizing and bad JPEG compression, and - I might add - in combination with the visual heat distortion effect emitted by the explosions.

In terms of graphics options, I have a feeling that the official release will be different than the demo. Of course, I'm not a GFX expert nor an 3D engine expert, so I don't know if this is possible to have a different demo engine and official release engine.

Not usually in terms of general game options.....content and possibly revision of code yes, but setup options not likely.

ok, wiat a sec, whats DOF?

Depth of field.

In computing terms, it's a simulation of a photographic technique that uses distance based focus to make a scene appear to have much more realistic depth, by blurring objects that are far away (and thus beyond the focal scene).

Check this post...interesting. So the engine doesn't change, just the addition of more XML files. Maybe DOF might be an option or possibly something to be modded???

If so, would that assist rendering?

i dunno i don't think i would want DOF.

a lot of games seem to be replicating cinematic/photographic techniques such as motion blur and DOF.

it's something cameras do, not human eyes. i don't want to feel like i'm watching a movie; i want to feel like im a ghost in mexico city. just my opinion of course.
