BS PALADIN
Can anyone tell me what the best modding software is for making a SP mod with MP gametype. IGOR is good and I know my way around it quite well ( do a campaign atm ) but in a few months I'd like to try my hand at another editor. So what games with modding software ( dont say UDK, as its too much work ) are best for this. Ideally the editor would allow the use of ingame maps and assets. I want to only add a few extra ones myself. For instance can you do campaigns with the COD4 mod tools. Or are the Half Life 2 mod tools any good? Any advice would be appreciated. Tinker
Hammer editor is very good, simple to use and a lot of options. Def worth a look at.
BS PALADIN
Thanks. Tinker you ever worked with Cryengine 2?
Pave Low
The mission editor with Operation Flashpoint: Cold War Crisis is extremely powerful and is very easy to lean, you can pick the GOTY edition of the game up nowadays for a few pounds and there is an immediate Mountain of tutorials, guides, how-to's and demo missions already just sitting on the internet waiting to be read. and the benefits of learning the basics of the OFP editor, immediately transfer over into all of the numerous games that use updated versions of the original editor like ArmA, VBS 1, Arma 2/Operation Arrowhead, VBS 2 See here for some Dev video examples of how quick and easy it is to make a simple mission in the latest updated version of the editor used in A2: Op Arrowhead http://www.ghostrecon.net/forums/index.php?showtopic=55602
BS PALADIN
I used the OFP editor before and thought it was excellent. Still think the core gameplay is loose ( and that applies to its sequels ) and not what Im looking for.
Tinker
Thanks. Tinker you ever worked with Cryengine 2? Not at all. Google said Crysis 1 or 2? Best for this. Not sure what you are after? What are you looking, wanting to do?
remix79
Confused newb here...so you can use other editors besides Igor to create [GR] missions? EDIT: nevermind, I thought this was in the GR PC mod forum. Edited November 21, 2010 by remix79
BS PALADIN
Not sure what you are after? What are you looking, wanting to do? Im looking to make a campaign with good story and good gameplay. My initial aim is to make a GR Redo campaign with slightly different story and different gameplay. After that I hope to take what Ive learned and apply it to a better engine ( hence the question ). At the end of the day I want to make a mod that I would want to play. No offence to other modders out there but alot of modders look at gimmicks, new skins and new models before they look at gameplay. I want to look at gameplay first. And IGOR is good to start with. Plus learning to get the most out of an old engine is good experience as well. Atfer I have good gameplay down with IGOR i would want to goto a more advanced engine to add more modern capabilities to the game ( like facial animation and higher graphical fidality ) to add to the immersion and functionally to the mod. Thats the aim anyway.
firefly2442
+1 for Arma 2 editor. It's quite easy to get going quickly, you just have to be patient and have some good tutorials/instructions. The scripting makes it worthwhile and very powerful. Gameplay and the engine, well, I think it still has a ways to go, but the editor is great. Lightspeed
I have used Igor, Crysis, OFP: Dragon Rising, Arma 2 editor, and even Tiger Woods editor for golf course creation. They are all good but take time to learn obviously. But the most important thing is that you have a good modding community around you to turn to when you want to do something but don't know how to do it. Once upon a time it was GR.Net for mission making in Ghost Recon. Now I go to Bohemia Interactive Forums and I get the answers I need immediately and discover new and amazing things there all the time that modders are creating. Hundreds of map, character and object modders, scripters and mission makers doing crazy ###### and eager to share knowledge to genuine modders who want to learn the art. I have been there about 18 months now and know some of them well enough to write scripts for me within 24 hours. The big thing with Arma2 which took a little time to get used to after Igor was the use of scripts. Was something I dint fully understand, bcoz Igor has all the scripts built in so you are just executing these hidden codes. In Arma2 you have to add the scripts to your mission files and execute them using triggers in game. But once you get used to that concept then you will use them all over the place and they are incredible and plentiful and add so much more to your missions. What scripts you ask? Helicopter insertions, medivacs, patrol scripts, revive scripts, fast roping, objectives complete, new objectives added, extractions, reinforcements, its endless - if you need it you can prolly find it in the forums. If you want to recreate Ghost Recon campaigns then Arma2 is the best - and if you need help let me know - in fact I am planning to recreate another GR campaign remake of Desert Siege soon so maybe you want to help me and you can learn on the way. I have got the GR-style of mission worked out on Arma2 and I am happy to share that with you. Crysis has graffix for sure - but much more difficult with triggers and AI moving through the map - kind of like GRAW where they have preset waypoints through the map that they have to follow (maybe modders figured out how to get around that now). But Arma2/OA for the win - learn that and you will be an advanced mission maker.
