Game Over

Recommended Posts

Hi survivors,

Just wanted to make a little post since I'm feeling nostalgic tonight at 11PM with nothing better to do. During my two or so years here, I've ###### a lot of people off, done a lot of stupid things, made many immature comments that I regret, and been an ###### towards some of this forum's users. I wanna thank JohnTC02 and Rocky for being way too patient with me and helping me to grow up and learn to not be an idiot all the time.

Now, with that out of the way, I wanna give a round of applause. Applause for Ubisoft doing one thing right, -- that one thing being Ghost Recon 1, of course. Applause for the modders, such as Jack57, Tinker, etc., who have spent hundreds and thousands of hours toiling away on their projects and helping others to do the same on this forum. Applause for the guys, including Rocky and JohnTC02 (if you're even still around), who are still to this very day running a forum for a game that is 99.99% dead at their own expense.

:clapping:

There's been bad times and there's been good times here at GR.net, but one thing is for sure -- it's been one helluva ride and I love all of the awesome people in this community (most of you, anyway :P). I've really gotten into the Arma series (specifically Arma 2, since Arma 3 is still too buggy and futuristic for our community's liking and purposes) and it's my favorite game now, but I'll never forget the good ol' days of pulling my hair out in the IGOR editor, enjoying discussion on this forum about the series, and fighting my way through insanely challenging and terrifying missions on the ridiculously tiny but nonetheless incredible maps of Ghost Recon. The king of first-person shooters may be 99.99% dead, but it will never die in the little video-game-memories area of my heart. :)

While I think that the GRAW days are numbered I think that GR will be around for a very long time to come.

GR= the best tactical game out there, even If it is older than some of our members. :)

Even good old Heroes Unleashed is getting revived.

And yeah, I'm still here Riley watching your every move, it's been fun looking after you for the past couple of years, LOL!

Ledanek, why would I think that you would manage to come up with a way to reply to this heart-warming speech with a cat picture?

Lol, glad to know I still have my online fatherly figure to keep me in check :P Glad I was able to keep things lively around here in GR's declining stages.

You know you're getting old if GR is only 6 years younger than you and the game is 13 years old.

Riley didn't mention me, yay!

Yeh, the GR days were unbelievable. Aside from the game there was a whole soap opera of stuff going on behind the scenes here with competition amongst different GR sites, staffing issues, membership issues, site issues, mod hosting dramas, just loads of stuff going on that is just amazing to think back on. So many stories!

After all this time though, after all these different shooters that have come out over the past decade, some promising to be tactical, there really is no argument, Ghost Recon REMAINS the most accessible squad based tactical shooter bar none.

I'm waiting on some brand new custom missions coming in from a new modder, really looking forward to installing them and getting back into some old school tactical gaming!

Hey riley with the ArmA series on sale last week on steam a good great running game believe it or not is ArmA Gold. I know it's an older title but it still plays well and looks pretty good. Resources for it are half of what is needed for ArmA II and there are a TON of assets and islands for it. It also has one of the greatest islands ever made for the arma series if you like close Q city battles (Porto i wanna say) Anyways its part of the Annex version of ArmA 2 so you probably already own it..

meh, Ghost Recon isn't dead to me, I think it's perhaps got a little old and senile, but it's not dead. it's like that old fella who lives across the street who just won't die, despite several falls and mishaps.

I will say though, I have moved on to arma, similarly to you riley, however i'm much bigger on the Arma 3 scene than the others, but I suppose thats because I learned to mod RV with arma 3. Its one of those games that you either settle into real quick and love it, or just can't quite grasp.
Arma 1 is an excellent little game, it's showing its age a bit now, with the blocky looking interface and lack of JJ abrams-esque post process effects, but its still fun to play classic warfare, with clunky animations and quirky face textures.

There are mods that tone down/completely remove the futuristic look, certainly with the CSAT guys, I think there's one called the CSAT modification project, which replaces the Bug like uniforms with more believable ones, based around the AAF body models.
I'm hoping their mystery expansion may also include present day warfighters and some less populated Islands. Altis and Stratis seem way too busy to actually do anything on them, but they are good fun to mess around with.

i'm actually thinking of making an island based around the ghost recon orgimiss campaign, spread things out a bit, make it believable, and then that's where the REAL fun begins! :D

Ghost Recon will perk up if and when the next title is announced, for the love of this franchise, lets hope its good!

Ah I only just recently gave up modding for ofp, so much left unfinished and unreleased (sigh)

If it wasn't for my determination to finish the current mod I would have moved on to arma 3 by now (sigh) such plans I have for it.

Sometimes I wish I could just stop time and crank out everything I need to do in one go, so much to do so little spare time.

Hopefully some people will still be playing by the time it happens :P

:hmm: Game Over! Sometimes I feel like it's game over for GR as I wonder off and play various newer games but no matter how many months go by not playing GR, the minute I fire it up and start playing again it never fails to put the biggest grin on my face as it did many years ago when I first played it. So I don't think GR will ever be game over for me!!!

I think modding or mapping is like fly tying you really gotta do it for yourself. I still build missions in OFp as well. I just play them with a close group of friends. Same with various versions of the ArmA series. Each version has its great and not so great parts to it and I can't tell which one is better for me because they all can be great fun and utterly frustrating lol. OFP is by far my favorite. I was a long time beta tester for Thunderbird and the FFUR series which i will never not love. I also love Sactuary's work (GRAA 3.0 and WW4 2.5) So not to ramble i think there will always be people who will see something new from GR and say, like I do "OOo i need to reinstall it so I can play this!!!" and we will lol
