  1. You can also check out the texturing chapter in 3DS's tutorials. Just go under the HELP menu in 3DS and click on TUTORIALS, you'll find the texturing chapter in there.
  2. Double check your UVW mapping coordinates. It is likely that the light blue face is either not lined up with the texture map, or the map is stretched way out.
  3. Well, yes and no. It is possible to model a weapon in Maya, then export the mesh as a 3DS (or other 3D) file to be imported into 3D Studio MAX. I haven't used the PLE version of Maya, but I have in the past exported models to be used later in 3DS MAX. Because the PLE is a 'student' version, I would imagine that a lot of the functions are limited or perhaps even eliminated altogether. If you want to model in Maya, just make sure you become good buddies with someone who owns a copy of 3DS R3 or higher so they can export the weapons into the correct format for use in GR. Good luck!
  4. You know, I've got an F/A-18C Hornet model thats just under 600,000 polys. We should get together to make a "bring your 'fast' computer to it's knees" mod for Ghost Recon. Just joking.
  5. Okay, heres the info I got from the physics expert friend... Basically, a silencer should have a negligible effect on bullet velocity. Basically, all the silencer does is redirect the sound waves so that they cancel each other out, thus eliminating most of the sound. The porting doesn't really effect the round in any way. Because of pressure changes along the barrel (or silencer) there may be a slight loss in power, but not usually enough to make a difference.
  6. One of my best friends is working on a master's degree in aerospace engineering at MIT, he knows physics like the back of his hand. I'm going to ask him about it, so as to get the math to determine the actual loss in power (if any) from using a silencer.
  7. Thanks for the help guys. Looks like I'll be playing with the .gun files tonight to make things a little more realistic.
  8. I just spent a quick break playing some GR because my brain is fried from debugging C++ code for the past 7 hours, and I noticed something I didn't like... I was playing with some silenced weapons and noticed that the power was seriously lacking. I used a silenced M4, and a sniper rifled called AW COVERT; anyway, from about 10 yards I shot a 'tango' in the throat with the M4 only to watch him turn around and kill me with a quick burst from his AK. The silenced sniper rifle didn't do too much better. My question then, is how much does a silencer slow down the bullet velocity? I looked at the .gun files and saw that the SOCOM M4 was set about 200 lower than the normal M4. Is this correct?
  9. I'm not positive, but everything there looks correct. I had a similar problem with the game crashing when I tried to access weapons from my first mod. It turned out that the problem I had was that the link to the .gun file within the .kit NEEDS to be all lowercase. No caps at all, and it worked for me. See if that's your problem. Just make sure that in the .kit file you have (example): <ItemFileName>fnp90.gun</ItemFileName> and NOT <ItemFileName>FNP90.gun</ItemFileName> Hope that helps.
  10. Looking very good! Can't wait to see it textured and in-game.
  11. What release version of 3DS are you using, and what kind of system to do the modelling? 3DS runs rock solid for me, I've worked on scenes with well over a half-million polygons and never once had it crash.
  12. Okay, it seems we are in agreement that they were HARMs. "Now let us never speak of it again." <--- got that line from Marge Simpson
  13. I know the UN doesn't like it being used...but nothing beats napalm for soft targets. "I love the smell of napalm in the morning!"..."smells like victory!" Tollen, don't sweat it... I'm sure the guy directing the movie didn't know what it was. I really wish directors and producers would do their job and research the stuff they are portraying in these movies. Jerry Bruckheimer (Black Hawk Down) and Steven Speilberg (Saving Private Ryan) seem to be the only two that did this... and even they got a few details wrong. Oh well, thats just Hollywood. At least the movies are fun to watch.
  14. Tollen, look very closely at the fins on the missile from the movie. It slopes back at approx. 30 degrees, then angles at 15 degrees. Whereas in your pic of the AMRAAMs, the fins are a constant ~50 degrees. Those are HARMs in the movie. Also note the size of the missiles; if you look at where the rear of the movie's missiles are, they extent nearly to the back of the wing, under the flaps. HARMs are approx. 164 inches long, AMRAAMs are only 144 - that's almost 2 feet longer. Trust me, I know my airplanes and ordinances; those are AGM-88s. Blakeness, the Marine Corps flies Hornets with wingtip AMRAAMs. I have a poster of one sitting in my office. Not all Hornets are deployed on carriers at all times. Congrats on being accepted into the flight program, good luck, and do your best to let the Air Force know who the best pilots really are.
  15. The AGM-88 HARM looks nearly identical to the AIM-120 AMRAAM, with the exception that the HARM is a lot bigger and the aft fins are shaped a little differently. HARMs use a passive RADAR seeker head to guide to its target, and can target any radiation (RADAR) emitting target. E.i, you can shoot other stuff besides SAM sites. Just like on the F-16, AMRAAMs can be fitted to wingtip pylons. AIM-9's aren't the sole ordinance anymore.
