Introduction

Following the series of very good mods dedicated to other military forces around the world this time we stop in Scandinavia and more in detail in Sweden. Wolfsong is a total conversion modder who, nearly one year ago, completed his Swedish Force mod, now available in version 1.4.4.

Content

As already mentioned this is a total conversion mod and features are impressive. There is not enough space here to explain what is available in this mod. The same Wolfsong realized an Excel file to list all the modifications introduced in this mod. Just to mention something:

New Swedish names for all player actors

New skins for all player actors based on the real swedish M90 system with snow- or rainwear when needed.

New weapons and kits for all player actors including most of the weapons found in the Swedish Armed Forces.

35 new weapon models. Most with 2 different skins.

18 new reticules for the custom weapons.

New different character classes (1 for SP only and 3 for MP)

12 Original and 27 updated SP Missions for Swedish Force. 36 of those are in a unique campaign.

All 8 DS campaign missions have been converted to snow with Russian enemies and re-textured vehicles.

All briefings for GR, DS & IT missions have been edited to work with the conversion.

new MP-Only characters.

Characters

I’m not an expert of Swedish military forces but le me say that playing this mod you have a new feeling. Wolfsong made 3 different kinds of uniforms. You might say that this is typical of the quality mods since there are 3 environments available (woodland, desert and jungle). And here it’s the big surprise: Desert Siege has been converted in Arctic Siege and therefore desert uniforms have been replaced with winter uniforms. And jungle camos became a more realistic (for Sweden Forces, of course) rain camos. I don’t like the woodland uniforms but this is due to the design of the real Swedish camos rather than poor skinning work (although in my opinion it’s a bit too dark).

Don’t forget the contribute by Hotpants who made the new character model and texture used for the A-Dyk specialist.

Map Textures

Here Sleeper (who contributed to the mod) made an excellent work literally transforming the desert environment of Desert Siege in the opposite winter one. The new maps set had the name changed in Arctic Siege. You can see also the snow just fallen over the trees and palms (yes palms, for obvious reasons the modding team couldn’t manipulate the original 3ds studio files)

Weapons

I’m not an expert (Hey, I see I’m expert of nothing, so why should I make reviews?) so what I can do is to read the informations providing by Wolfsong. The Swedish Force soldiers in this mod use only weapons available to their army. You can’t see them use OICW for example. The models are really good even if they don’t reach the quality of weapons modelled by specialists like Earl, Warden Mac of DTD or Streinger. Wolfsong made a very good job anyway being helped only by the same Earl with the model for KSP94 (MG3). The only disappoint comes from the reticules that are in my opinion a bit big thus hiding the view of the action. Listening to some comments of the community Wolfsong released a tiny patch to go back to the original reticules (Note: the patch is not updated so it can produce not perfect results on version 1.4.4)

Missions

This is the most controversial aspect of this mod. If you look at the mission folder of this mod you will find 96 .mis files. But if you analyze them carefully you will see as following:

nr. 8 + 5 updated missions for Island Thunder

nr. 8 + 5 updated missions fro Desert Siege (Arctic Siege)

nr. 15 + 6 updated missions for Ghost Recon

nr. 8 co-op missions from Cobra Gold Tournament

an entire campaign 40 missions long

The campaign consist in 1 training mission, 27 updated missions and 12 new missions. Practically it consists of the 3 original campaign linked together with the updated missions and some new missions to break the continuity of the original campaign. All the briefing have been reworked to set the campaign in Uzbekistan. Missions are very good and I enjoyed to play them but I couldn’t avoid to feel that a new original campaign could be the right boost for this mod.

In many forums I could read people asking for some updates of original missions so here they will find what they were looking for!

Extras

Every single thing who could be manipulate has been touched by this mod. Screenshots, coloured interface, intro video and so on.

Moreover Wolfsong developed a special combo mod to allow to play Frostbite (the other incredible representative of Scandinavian mods) and Swedish Force together. I warmly suggest you to install the combo even if you don’t plan to play the 2 mods together since the patch from Swedish Force from 1.4.2 to 1.4.4 is included correcting some few earlier bugs and adding more.

Wolfsong is one of the pioneers of GR modding (Those were the days…) and his contributions to the modding community is very high (although with an his own attitude ;-)). In this mod he packed also his Effect Test Zone V2.0, a very good tool to allow the other modders to learn about effects.

Bugs (?)

In my playing I could experiment a very stressing bug concerning the mission Liquid Diamond (specifically developed by Wolfsong) where if you set many waypoint your system will crash. I couldn’t find the reason so I suppose it was due to my low end PC.

Overall Score: 8.5/10

I’m a missions fan and my score has surely been affected by the lack of a dedicated campaign. Overall it’s a wonderful mod and should be discovered by those people who never downloaded it because they are not from Sweden

Fan Feedback

“Great job Wolfsong, especially the game-balance/realism.” SAN

“Come on fellas, Swedish Forces deserves more credit than this. Even if ya not particularly interested in the Swedish Armed Forces still d/l it, you wont be dissapointed...” AVEY

Nice review, thou I must say I think youve been a bit hard of wolfsong at points, "The models are really good even if they don’t reach the quality of weapons modelled by specialists like Earl, Warden Mac of DTD or Streinger." I think that the models are of a high standard but it was a diffrent age of GR modding. And that Earl, Warden Mac and Streinger never had to do all the other work WolfSong did as well at the same time.

I think more recognition needs to be shown for total conversions, Having done one myself considerably smaller than this one Id say much respect to Wolfsong and sleeper for making such a huge CHANGE in GR because thats what its about if you open up GR and its a change then thats worth something.

Still I think your score of 8.5 is well placed.

PS I felt it my duty to speak for Wolf we where good friends back when I started modding over at The Platoon and he always helped me out.

Long time lurker here...only post once in a blue moon...gotta post on this.

I think the Swedish Forces is fantastic, especially with the Frostbite combo. The Desert Seige to Arctic Seige is especially cool, even if the missions are mostly the same, there are some nice little changes that kept on my toes.

However, I couldn't very far into the regular campaign because the problem Giwex mentined (On about 2/3rds of the missions, usually after a save or load, the game would CDT everytime I brought up the command map). Made it a real problem to play. Don't think it's a slow machine issue...anyone else have the same issue?

After being on dial-up forever and just having switched to DSL, I am finally able to enjoy some of the great big-ass GR Mods that I've been wanting to snag. Extra Grande thanx to all the modders, Wolfsong included, for the hours of hard work on this great game. Not being able to play this beauty is bugging the heck outta me (no pun intended).

My machine:

AMD Athalon 2400+ 1.99Ghz

512 DDR

Radeon 9600 Pro

Edit: OS Win XP was playing with Sp1, just got SP2 the other day

Thanx for the feedback. Too bad I've stopped modding GR a long time ago and don't really remember how to fix things that people have problems with anymore. Although I know some have finished the campaign without problems.

I can tell you for sure that you can't save/load on these missions but that's something I've never used anyhow so I didn't bothered to look into it like most mods of the time.

I know about that save/load problem that Reverend mentioned, but I haven't looked into that as I'm totally against that function being in these games. :P Still haven't done anything special the cause this, it just happens in a lot of mission mods.

On to the waypoint problem. I've never had that actually. And neither has either of my testers that mailed in.

If anyone run into it again, please post the error log. And maybe I'll be able to fix it. ;)

Ok, talked to Giwex again and he had tried to get the error to show up again after my last post but it never happened.

So I guess it work about 95% of the time... Which will probobly by ok as it's an old mod by now. So I'll put my time into other projects for now.

Ran into the same problem. It's the 8th mission, SF10-Liquid Diamond. I'm using SF v1.4.4 and after being ordered by the UN commander to assemble in the camp, nothing happens. :( I've replayed it several times. No extraction zone shown and no further instructions from the UN cmdr. This is a good mod up to this point.

The same thing happened over and over?

As this isn't a crash issue I really need to know alot to be able to fix it as it hasn't happend for me. Are you using any other mod with SF? You sure that you did everything you've been asked to do up to that point?

Ok. Been looking at this again for the first time in over a year.

What I would need to know is:

What is the last order you got?

Is the UN Leader, Capt. Janson, still alive?

Did you get the extra objectives 3 & X?

EDIT: I've put together a v1.4.5 with old changes I made before jumping out of the GR comminty that will be released soon hopefully. Everything else has been checked over again after all this time and is done so I'm just waiting for feedback on the issues in SF10 - Liquid Diamond so that can be fixed.

Other changes in v1.4.5 include:

- Brighter camo and harness textures for normal skins and winter skins (harness only)

- Small fixes to Ksp 90 model and textures.

- Edited GUN files for Psg 90. Camo version now uses SABOT ammo.

- Fixed rolloff range for the Ksp 58 sounds to attract more enemies when fired.

- Added custom reticle remover patch and restorer patch for latest version.

- Added 2 new tutorials (Word with pictures) on how to make the door scripts used in SF.

- Included FB/SF Combo mod into SF-FK&C v1.4.5 master download.

The reason I decided to do this pack is partly because of the file server problem so it has to be uploaded again anyhow. So why not upload a more resent version ;)

Authors note:

I would have liked to redo all my skins and models... They are really not up to date with my current standards... But there is simply not time for it and it's an old game/mod. ;)

I have the final compilation of all released versions of the mod (and most of the other mods that got thrown out, converted and included into it) still on my HD. Checked on the compile/relsease dates.

Iceman, I believe I know why you didn't get any order. It's because you didn't gather all the player platoon close to the commander. Be only sure to realize who is the commander and then you will have the extra objectives.

@WS: check your PM! ;)

I'm away from my modding computer for about another week. In the middle of moving to another town and have been there with my stuff but I'm staying until with my girlfriend, who's not moving, until the semester starts. I'll do some small fixes to the SF10 mission then and get 1.4.5 up for download.
