Generally smooth gameplay but choppy reticle?!

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

I need your help as I didn't find any help via Google and checking this forum.

I am still waiting for my Ghost Recon retail game to arrive (just recognized this game as a must try some days ago and ordered on Ebay) and I started playing the Demo in the meantime. Ive got a 2009 low end notebook with an onboard shared memory GPU which generally should be very suitable for Ghost Recon. I can play 1366x768 with all details on high, gameplay is smooth, but the reticle feels very choppy. It feels like the "minimum distance" to turn is very big, so I have a problem with precise aiming as I most times point some millimeters next to the target. This happens when I play with my cheap but suitable i.e. for Battlefield II five bucks optical mouse as well as with the more sensitive touch pad of my notebook and with mouse emulation via Pinnacle and XBOX 360 Controller. The higher the sensivity setting is, the more I have aiming problems.

I don't know this problem from other old shooters like BF2, where it is much more precise. I come from GRAW2 on XBOX 360 and even in this game I recognized such a problem with the gamepad. So I am wondering if this is a system caused problem or something quite normal with the Ghost Recon series. I don't think that my system causes this because the game generally runs pretty smooth except the choppy reticle (standard view as well as zoomed in, but a lot more in zoom). It is always the same even in 640x480, low details, sound off.

Thank you very much for your help and comments!

Cheers!

Julian

From the games main menu go to the options / input tab and try a different setting for mouse sensitivity. I have mine set at 0.7.

I don't have the demo but never had the problem of aiming to one side or the other to hit the target with the full game.

Hi Wombat!

Thank you for your fast reply. I have already tried several settings regarding the mouse sensivity and I can confirm that low sensivity settings help a lot with my precision problem, but I have never seen a first person view game that required such a low mouse sensivity to make it smooth like Ghost Recon. I think it must be typical for the GR series as the Gamepad Controls in GRAW/2 on the XBOX 360 are a bit choppy, too, especially when zoomed in.

Maybe I as a console gamepad player also have to get used to aiming with a mouse that doesn't give smooth movements like an analog gamepad stick but "move an stop", so it must depend on the sensivity settings and maybe the sampling rate of the device. Not a clue why other games like BF2 don't suffer from this but i think I can get familiar with it as Ghost Recon doesn't require fast movements because of the open field maps and wide distances you shoot.

So I'll play a bit around with the sensivity settings in the demo to have a good setup if my full retail game finally arrives. :-)

Cheers!

Julian

Welcome to the GR community!

I have the same thing .... my sensitivity has been set at 0.1 for many years now. I've been playing since it first released, and have almost always played it on laptops. But even on my desktop I have to have it a 0.1. Just a side effect of an older game, I suppose.

Do you think this was quite standard back in these days and controls just improved with new games over the years? I can't remember any aiming issues when I played PC FPS as a teeanger when I was playing Quake and Quake 2 with my dudes via LAN. But these games even did'nt have any zoom. Well, I thnki I should just stop wondering about mouse sensivity, get used to it and just have fun with the (for me) new Ghost Recon. But it's good to hear that it is not a hardware issue or my newbie skills... ;-)

  • 4 months later...

I'm having the exact some problem. It's almost unplayable. Also on a laptop and I'm pretty sure I never had this when I last played the game many years ago.

Other games older than Ghost Recon are fine so it's the game. Hopefully somebody can help out been looking forward to playing
