I think you forgot to add 'wo' before 'men' in the title of your post...

I am not sure mean is the right word, it's a bit vague. Men are bad though and should be avoided at all cost. Don't say you have not been warned.

Does that mean you too? What will your wife say about that revelation?
There are some real jerks out there for sure, but let it be known, they will get theirs in the end.

Short answer, we don't know better. We wish we did, but it's outside our scope.
Long answer includes genetics, social norms, and physiological differences.
To avoid the long answer, I'm sorry that you (likely) have a (justified) reason to be annoyed.
Brackets just in case.... I'm pretty sure they are moot.

All matter of perception.
Mean as in terrible, i.e Saddam Hussein was mean tyrrant.
Mean as in a compliment, i..e that David Beckham can play a mean soccer game.
Mean as in Math, as in I skipped math class, I cannot describe what mean is.
Now if a female is the origin of the conversation, it probably was a synonym for lack of emotion. Example: My boyfriend just stepped on my cat's tail and didn't apologize to my cat. He's mean!
So again, a little vague in the description.
