So what’s everyone’s opinion of the game so far?

Recommended Posts

It’s a mixed bag for me personally.  It does take itself more seriously than Wildlands in most areas which I appreciate.  I have yet to hear myself yell “SH!T BALLS” which I really do think is just fantastic.  The world they created is amazing.  Just wondering around the map looking at the landscapes is just crazy.  The map designers are really impressive!  The sound of the wind and whatnot along with the atmosphere and it really reminds me of old school GR feel.

The gameplay seems decent enough and the added ability to cover yourself with mud or whatever you’re in for stealth is cool.  I like that you don’t see a bunch of cut and paste NPCs with terrible AI walking around like in wildlands.  The bad ghost AI has been pretty decent from what I have seen though I hear others saying it’s been bad at times.

I guess I’m one of the few but I don’t mind the looter shooterish RPG gear side of things that were added.  It doesn’t really seem to impact the gameplay as best I can tell.  The animations seem better and I like the idea of survival things they added though I know a lot of people disagree about that.  But it works imo as it’s not over done or underdone from what I have seen this far.

As for the not so great, the biggest thing is the poor performance on PC on anything over 1080p.  At 1440p I can get 60 fps but it jumps around like crazy from 60 to 45 or so…very frustrating.  The terrible random voice acting and dialog of the bad ghost is ridiculous generally.  Having to be online always was a dumb move.  The story premise is kind of dumb.  Driving in a GR game is still stupid.  I’m not crazy at all about the special abilities stuff and the perk points or whatever.  That is not really what I personally think GR should be.  The screen getting dark when in cover is aggravating.  A lot of small bugs in general.  That’s all I can think of at the moment but in general the game feels very unfinished and lacks polish.

Also Ubi REALLY is getting a ton of terrible press too.  Some very much deserved.  The whole microtransactions idea was just BAD!  What a stupid move…shoehorned in the game to make money.  Will these companies never learn?  A lot of reviewers will tear this game apart and give it bad scores just for this reason alone resulting in hurting sales.  Regardless if it bothers you or not personally, it bothers a lot of gamers who already feel like these gaming companies only care about money.  It does not bother me because I don’t buy any of it but after the bad press from other games like Battlefront you would think they would have figured it out.  I know they said it was an accident but no one is going to believe that.

Anyway, that’s my take.

For me Breakpoint is a mystery. I've only had a couple of hours on the campaign, and a few PvP games, but I can't get my ahead around a few things.

  • Why have they added crafting elements to a tactical shooter, when they must have realised that copy pasting a game mechanic from Far Cry into Ghost Recon, when the "It's Far Cry with Ghosts" criticism started back with Wildlands! They have only reinforced this concept with this crafting nonsense, honestly this decision is bewildering.
  • Why have they added loot boxes / micro-transactions at a time governments are looking at loot boxes as a point of concern and calling publishers to the table to explain why kids are fleecing their parents for money they they already paid for a full price game. Poor idea, poorly implemented seems to be the consensus of opinion and it is hard to disagree.
  • Why does Breakpoint look graphically worse than Wildlands when both are set to Ultra. I also get tearing (even in simple hardly intensive cut scenes) which I never got in Wildcards.
  • Breakpoint has the WORST launch week user review scores for any Ghost Recon game I can recall. Currently at 6.2, but was around 2.1 earlier.

There are plenty of neat features, but some of these features should have never been removed from the series in the first place (hello gimping).

What irks me most, is that when I was in Paris, several times, and met with the dev team pre-Wildlands, I wasn't the only one pointing the finger back in time, to the most important features that this series needs to remain a Ghost Recon series. I knew it was too late to see these changes (ie tac map, squad ROE and waypoints etc), but I, and others, made the point anyway, not just hoping, but expecting to see these features make it into Wildlands 2.

Instead, they ignore those suggestions, and take the series further away from it's roots!

The shooter community still do not have an accessible squad based tactical shooter. No single game meets all 3 of those criteria, and Ubisoft could have prevented that.

They made a huge move in the right direction when they addressed the tightly scripted missions of the GRAW games and gave us back total freedom of choice, but with Breakpoint instead of continuing that momentum - they wasted it with RPG, crafting and micro transactions that virtually NOBODY wanted in Ghost Recon.

  1. When did we EVER see ANYONE post up, "hey Ubi, please make GR like The Division and Far Cry, lets start a petition!" - NEVER
  2. When did we see posts like "this is not Ghost Recon anymore, make it  new IP" - REGULAR.

Ubisoft apparently saw $$$ and went for option 1.

A bit of a rant there, but there you go. That's my current take, ask me again when I have 100 hours in Breakpoint.

Cool game, but there's legitimately no narrative reason for Nomad to be conducting all these missions by himself. The very first time we step into Erewhon, we literally see two other Ghosts who are clearly not injured and are capable of helping him out.

I'm really hoping that the AI teammates come back soon.
