SSD drive format

Recommended Posts

Yesterday my SSD drive failed for no reason. OS would not start, drive was not visible in the bios. Tried a new cable, and a different port, plus a cold shutdown. Today I fitted a new SSD drive and it showed straight up, and I just finished reinstalling everything.

It was just over a year old. OCZ has 3 years warrenty, so I will probably get a replacment back.

2 things I was curious about.

I just went and fitted the new drive and installed stuff, same as last time. However while waiting for the windows updates, I read the manual. It states that the drive comes unformatted, and you can format it by normal means. I did not format it, is this a necessary proceedure?

OCZ have a toolbox you can download to update and mantain the SSD drive. However, it states on the website that it does not support the drive, if it is used as a primary drive. Wth would be the point of a SSD drive as a secondary drive?

Anyone else had any issues with SSD drives?

Windows automatically partitions and formats your hard drive during installation. You don't need to do anything.

As long as your drive has TRIM support there's really nothing you need to do to maintain it.

I just installed an Intel brand SSD and it didn't need to format interestingly - must have already been pre-formated in NTFS as I did a Win 7 install ...
