Dissapointed

So I've played for an hour or so with the Xbox 360 beta.

There's al ot to like that's for sure. Love the cover, even though it's a bit quirky and I can "feel" a performance hit. The yellow cover-to-cover marker is really nice. There are some very cool HUD call outs and other features.

What really gets me is the "Unlock" requirements to get equipment. I hate that more than anything. It makes me think it's just another shooter. So that means when new users come in they have to go though weeks of frustration just to get on par with other team mates. I was really hoping that that feature would not be a part of this game. Darn it.

Spawn camping is already an issue.

I'll buy it though. Both the PC and Xbox version. Oh wait, if the PC version is STEAM enabled or UBI connect enabled then I'll just stick with the Xbox.

I'm curious as to what others think so far.

I'm thinking, well at least you have actually played the beta of the game before making a verdict, just remember though, there's a little more time left for tweaks yet i would suggest you patch this through to Ubi as a suggestion.

Unlockables gives a sort of challenge element, although annoying, it gives you something to look forward to, to me as a light gamer (these days) i enjoy the unlockables i think multiplayer would be boring without them. it does give some people an unfair advantage but there's always the satisfaction of owning them with a ###### weapon.

I'll have to disagree with the fact that it's challenging. That's just me though. When I unload a clip into someone and they turn around and kill me, I call that a boat load of BS. Makes it a frustrating experience for me. But I'm sure there's some lag associated with it, but on the whole for me it's not fun.

I think what disappointed me about the unlocks is it felt like COD/Battlefield to me. I've always felt GR was not like that. Something special.

Anyway, I look forward to the campaign and co-op.

I feel your pain, I'm very much a single player these days myself and i think if i am honest, THAT is where GRFS will thrive, i don't think GR has been very strong on multiplayer, but i could be wrong.

I say give it a bit of patience it might be a thing you have to get in the swing of :/

This is the first GR game that hasn't interested me at all. The GRAW games had their issues, but the co-op was still great. I just don't see anything for me in this one. Maybe if they open up the demo to everybody I'll jump on, but in the meantime I'd feel bad taking up a beta code that somebody else might use for more than 10 minutes. :(

I have a group of about 6 guys that started playing together on GR2.

We played this for maybe an hour and everyone quit to go play BF3.

My general feelings where the controls are a bit clunky. Sprinting, running cover to cover, and going in and out of cover all cost me more than several deaths because my character did no do what I was trying to get it to do. I describe it as trying to control the avatar for the first time in Avatar.

So much gunfights, even on mill were players right on top of each other. Very few medium to long gr style gun fights.

intel spam will maybe be a problem. A team full of engineers could be unbalanced OP.

They did a nice job with animations, they look good and natural. No more back to cover, now it is shoulder cover with a lean out, not the full body swing like in rb6.

Even though I haven't played the demo, I found myself nodding in disappointed agreement with mattm1121's remarks about the unlock system... I think it's a disappointing blow to not only tactical realism, but game design in general that we have what are essentially 'Special Casino Prize' rewards for killing, and that this has become as much if not more of 'the game' then the objective design of the game itself.

Casnio Kill Prizes just rings of a bottom of th barrel cop out failure in applied game design to me, like something out of the movie Idiocracy... I don't mind not having immediate access to a huge arsenal of weapons or tons of 'Mall Ninja' crap, and there are so many much better ways in terms of both realism and game design to give Players managed access to weapons via mission design and weapon qualification systems and so on...

I was rather crushed at how badly this was done in GRAW, where I hoped to see the bar raised not lowered, so I'm less surprised here, but it's a bummer to see my favorite 'brand' slip closer and closer toward the homogenized arcade, fantasy, Casino crap that is Modern Warfare... Realism gaming has enough of an image problem, and Ghost Recon used to be something that you could hold up to the light of scrutiny as an example of military professionalism in gaming. Now, with the functional equivalent of little coloured stars prizes we can wear on our foreheads for pretend killing -- Ghost Recon is taking an extended powder...

I have to say I am a little disappointed in this game. I have been playing multiplayer Ghost Recon since the original. It was always a slower moving tactical game that required good positioning, communication and movement. They have sped up the gameplay and, with this cover system, have populated the environment with artificial cover points. In old GR games I would typically move to an area then low crawl looking for a good point to engage from, usually at mid to long range with an assault rifle. In about 2 hours on the beta I have not had an engagement over about 20 yards and mostly from cover. This game is just run from cover to cover and open up on on the stray head peaking out from cover by you.

That said, i like the toys like the UAV and the sensors, but they are easily overused. 2 sensors per engineer should be reduced to only 1, and the UAV should be in normal vision not thermal where its too easy to spot enemies. The sensors and UAVs would be better suited to large maps, not these small COD sized maps where they cover too much of the map.

The game overall feels like a cross between Gears of War and Call of Duty, not Ghost Recon. I would rather they go back to the Island Thunder formula. I would rather play Embassy a thousand times than this just once. But, since this is where all my online warriors will be, I will be here with them.

Good luck and happy hunting to all of you.

Thank you oSea_shepherdo, really well composed post, and mirrors my own (and I'm sure many others) frustration and disappointment with the disturbing lack of ranged engagement, and fixation on speed and action over tactical depth in the last several generations of 'tactical' Clancy games...

Like you, I'll still buy GR:FS, but that's getting more difficult with each game, and if there's ever a game truer to Ghost Recon the original then it's namesake sequels, Ghost Recon and the rest of the 'Clancy Franchise' will pretty much cease to be a subject of my interest except in the historical sense.

While GR:FS is obviously a very good looking and compelling game, it's strange to feel as ambivalent as I do; where previously every step of the way from R6, to Rogue Spear, to Ghost Recon, and even SOAF -- and all the expansion in between were games I looked forward to with unmitigated enthusiasm, and purchased without hesitation.

I think when you play it you have to remember that A . It isn't really Ghost Recon. It's Future Soldier which is what they should have called it. Like Dragon Rising or Tokyo Drift that used a well known name to boost the product they really are their own games that differ from the previous. When I play a new game I look at 1 thing. Is it fun to play? And is it well balanced? If you remember the hype of BF3 it was how it was this great balanced fighter that was the be all end all.... until people found flashlights and Grenade shotguns and it went to ###### from there. I'll play a game for a minimum of 10 hours before I render a judgement. Gives me time to get used to it. Find a groove in it and give it a fair shake.

Well said, Shepherdo, although I won't be there with anyone, because I'm not going to submit myself to the torture of watching my beloved series plummet nose-first into the ground because Ubisoft enjoys copying modern games but stealing the Tom Clancy Ghost Recon tag to stick on their pathetic Call of Duty remakes to boost sales.

I won't be playing it, because I'll be with my retarded AI teammates back on M09 Swamp having a hell of a time running through there with my new mod's weapons toasting the enemies. They'll never convert me.

Forgot about the Swamp. Awesome. Good times there.

Oh, and whats with the stupid gigantic backpack the engineer is carrying. Is that going to be removable? He carries ONE tiny UAV, TWO sensors, ONE camera, and 120 rounds. ###### is in there, the Ghosts laundry??? It should only be on him when he is carrying one of those mini-turrets or ammo packs for the team.

There are some constructive opinions here to begin with, pls keep on topic and avoid blatant bashing.

I finally got around to trying it... Definitely not Ghost Recon, that's for sure. As a game it was pretty meh. I was running around most of the time doing the usual TPV stuff like cover camping and waiting for people to walk by. This was made easier by pretty much constantly being able to see where the enemies were even through walls. The controls seemed sluggish as well, and the cover-to-cover sprint was hilariously fast. Maybe this is fun for somebody, but it sure isn't me.

Have to agree with you Mean. I just got done with a little more time on the beta and I have to say that I am even more unimpressed than I was the first time I played it. I got fed up with poor hit detection, random accuracy when firing from cover(it seems like sometimes I will pop up and be aimed right at someones head and all my bullets decide to go somewhere else, and other times its perfect), the ridiculous speed at which people move from cover to cover, and a few other things.

Overall I just didn't enjoy myself as much as I have in the past with old GR titles, heck, I enjoy myself playing BF3 more right now. I am going to keep trying it out as long as the beta is up, but so far I think the beta saved me $60.

Sniper Elite from the Original Xbox is backwards compatible and is the same game with slightly more dull graphics but it plays great. Don't waste $60 on Sniper Elite v2, just get yourself a $2 copy of the original and you will have the same fun but no upgraded graphics.

This game is really nothing like BF or COD... I don't understand why people keep saying that it is. Is it [GR] for the PC? No, but who actually thought it would be? You have to enjoy it for what it is. Hopefully the R&G stuff will die down when the full game comes out, but right now you have all of the people who enjoy any kind of shooter forced into one game mode on two fairly small maps. Really going to have to wait until the full version to see how things shake out, but I have been enjoying for what it is.

Ubisoft’s Thaddeus Sasser, Lead Multiplayer Game Designer on the upcoming Ghost Recon Future Soldier, gives fans an in-depth look into the highly anticipated competitive multiplayer mode that GRFS will be sporting come May 22 in North America.

Sasser recently sat down with Online Men’s Magazine, The Alpha Syndicate, in a “Q&A for the ages”. We’ve gathered all the important details below for your reading enjoyment.

The Last Man Standing game mode will not be returning this time around. Instead, the team will be bringing back Siege, a game type much like Last Man Standing, but with the addition of a central objective to be defended. Here, one team will spawn in a central location and will be required to defend an objective. Attackers will be deployed around the outside of the map. Each solder will have a single life with no respawns.

The objective capture rate has been sped up. The Confidence system affects hacking speed for Data Hacking (stealing an enemy’s positional intel from a stunned opponent). Other tools and features include in the competitive MP are UAVs, Suppression effects, and a Coordination System (players can mark objectives, enemy targets, or call for support). Ammo boxes and med kits will also be included.

Hardcore mode will not be present, although GRFS already includes high lethality. The HUD plays too important of a role to be excluded in any game type.

There will not be a dedicated first-person view. However, all guns do have a first-person scope view.

There will be a rank progression for system for public matches where players can unlock weapons and equipments based on their rank. An “open” system will be included for private matches. Meaning, all weapons and equipment are available for use.

GRFS will not include “killstreaks”. Focus is instead placed on rewarding players for completing objectives. For example, hacking into an enemy sensor network will reward players with positional intel, or capture ammo crates will allow players to resupply.

Included are 4 game types, 10 maps, 2 factions, 3 roles. Over 50 weapons, dozens of pieces of equipment, and a number of grenades are also at the disposal of every soldier.

GRFS will sport a fluid and responsive cover system. Sasser also assured fans that the 3rd person view isn’t over-effective as there is a stabilization period when moving with your weapon.

Sasser also added that, so far, a dominant strategy has yet to emerge during play tests. This should hopefully prove for balanced gameplay.

What really gets me is the "Unlock" requirements to get equipment. I hate that more than anything.

If i'm not mistaken? private matches have all equipment unlocked.

so far I think the beta saved me $60.

I have to say, if i was purchasing GRFS solely for the competitive multiplayer i would wait it out and purchase maybe 6 months+ later and try to bag a bargain buy.

I'm not gonna judge this game totally yet simply because its a MP Beta. I'll be buying this game mainly for the Campaign and the Co-op game play. But what i would say from playing the Beta so far is it's a good game when you're winning and it sucks when you're losing. The most impressive thing really was the character animations, though it can be annoying at times, the ability to get from cover to cover quickly is nice and the shoulder lean peaking. The gun views are nice also and was a needed option from GRAW2 .

Other than that, i was not really impressed with the gagets nor the classes really. I miss the Grenadier class from the past seires. Gameplay wise it's nice but lacks, i just don't know how to say it but it just feels like there is too much going on in the game you don't want and too little that you do want. I have won matches and lost badly in other matches, Data hacking is out of control, every one will have a stun gun when the game releases. I don't know why they didn't either limit the amount of times a team can be hacked, or limit it to one person that you have to hack in order to give up the teams position, like the engineer for example. Or when a team does get Hacked you will know about it and you have the option to shut down all communications and change channels or freqency. This way the other team will see where you are only for a split sec but once you jam the freqency they lose visual.

Old equipment and elements like Binoculars, larger maps, bullet drop and ghillie suits are what i missed. The digital camo is ok but i think they could have waited for the next installment to add that in. To be honest at times i liked it but i remember a better experience with the MP matches on GR2 and Summit Strike a lot more. I didn't have that urge to get up and play the entire day like i use to. It just didn't have elements in it to keep me coming back. I mean even some of my friends who are additicted to MP modes are on other games after the first few days of matches, i ask them what they think and they say it's tight but they have this response like "i've done this before." Frankly speaking they got bored after a while is what i got from it.

I'll see how the rest of the game goes come launch, Co-op and Campaign should give a different overall feel to the game and i hope that they have the option to turn off some of those Aids.

Before i go, just let me say this. I hear a lot of fellas saying just go with the flow or just try to have fun with it cause it's a different game now and i have said the same thing at times. But honestly there is no substitute for authenticity. This is one of the reasons why i stopped drinking Coke, cause they changed the taste. Sometimes in trying to make a product better you can actually make it worse, and you have to understand that if it ain't broke then don't break it by trying to fix it. In this case its going away from the key elements that made GR a name. I'm sure you can have "fun" with the game but there is no substitute for authenticity and if you don't understand what that means when it comes to a "tactical shooter" then your just having "fun" not true enjoyment....*think about it*

What really gets me is the "Unlock" requirements to get equipment.

The lock ups are annoying, although i have had only two, i have no choice but to switch off the 360 console, also i have experienced one host migration glitch which left me unable to do anything whilst in-game in a match round for approx 10-15 seconds. Connecting to ubisoft servers are hit and miss, sometimes i get in other times no joy but to exit to xbox home, and try again later or whenever. I'm on a 50+ mbs fibre optic connection at my place. I have to say i'm now anxious about the full xbox360 lockups when playing the mp beta. Although the console is ok it's still annoying, not good if this is random though. Is the console at risk with the lockups?, i certainly would stop playing if it was a PC beta, there is no way i would power off the PC like that.
