advice upgrade from 5850 1GB to 6xxx or 7xxx

here's my current:

Win7Pro 32-bit

ABIT IP35 Pro v1.1 BIOS v.16beta09/

Intel C2D E8400 Batch Q748A223 on Xigmatek HDT-RS1283

Radeon HD 5850 1GB on one Dell UltraSharp 2407FPW-HC

4GB Corsair CM2X2048-6400C5DHX 5-5-5-18 1.80V ver4.1

CORSAIR CMPSU-620HX 620W

CM Stacker 830SE/ ZALMAN ZM-F3RL 120mm /120mm Yate Loon D12SL-12

Creative Labs Fatal1ty ProGamer

I'm looking to upgrade my 5850 1GB for use with my single monitor

I play primarily BF3, Shift1-2, DiRT2-3...then may movies with DiRT2-3 replays with FRAPs (if possible in HD)

Please consider the CPU bottleneck (if any)

please suggest a $400, a $300, & $200 budget strictly ATI cards mainly due to a friend who works for company...wanna keep her employed

Advance thanks to the community

I'm in a similar boat as you as my latest Radeon card is a 5870.

First, with AMD releasing more of the 7xxx series last month, I would say you might as well get a 7800 or 7900 series card. There is no point getting a 6xxx series card - I don't think you will save that much and your 7xxx card will be supported longer.

You need to answer a couple more questions: what resolution are you playing at and what are your avg framerates? E.g. with BF3?

I think with a 3GHz Core 2 Duo/4GB RAM you might get better framerates with a newer card but you need to go up one price level at least. If you spend $250 for a 7xxx gen card you will likely not get much of a dramatic improvement. If you spend $400 you will hopefully notice a difference. Note: this is just a rough guess on my part, and again depends on what games you play, how old they are (DX10? DX11?), your resolution, etc. Best to scour the usual benchmarking sites for PC configs that are similar to yours.

That being said I did recently put a GF 570 in a separate rig (Core 2 Quad 2.4GHz) and it did give me a significant improvement over my old 8800 GTX. However, in this case I believe my C2Q at 2.4 GHz is a bottleneck.

Note with the longer $400+ cards they may not fit in certain case configurations, so make sure you can return your card if it doesn't fit. You may also need a new PSU.

as long as I set my motherboard this way

it'll probably fit ...that's a 8800GT btw.

thanks for the PSU advice, I totally forgot about it.

btw CR6, maybe relevant to your interest

  • 3 weeks later...

You're not supposed to use a Driver Sweeper at all. Just uninstall the drivers with their Remove tool, and install the new ones. Using Driver Sweepers can sometimes cause more issues than they fix.

So glad I haven't found any... I'm running benchmark (not very scientific) on current card, so I can compare. Nervous on my current PSU though. Maybe if I run 2 HD vs 3 HD, or less case fans

Well I reckon you'll know soon enough if that PSU will hold out. If I were you that would be first on my list of priorities.

I received $300 birthday cash from wifely, so now, I'm eyeballing these http://www.newegg.com/Product/Productcompare.aspx?Submit=ENE&N=100007657%2050001459&IsNodeId=1&bop=And&CompareItemList=58%7C17%2D139%2D030%5E17%2D139%2D030%2DTS%2C17%2D139%2D021%5E17%2D139%2D021%2DTS%2C17%2D139%2D006%5E17%2D139%2D006%2DTS%2C17%2D139%2D016%5E17%2D139%2D016%2DTS

Cpl, don't skimp on your PSU. You paid enough for your other components so make sure you get a good quality PSU and a (good quality surge protector too)

What is your current PSU? If you have any doubt it will run the new card, don't install the new card til you get your new PSU.

I am super-impressed with Corsair PSUs - you won't regret it. I posted about it in some other thread here

(And I like APC surge protectors)

this is my current PSU, its the CORSAIR HX Series CMPSU-620HX 620W ATX12V v2.2

I keep leaning to theCORSAIR Professional Series Gold AX750 (CMPSU-750AX) 750W ATX12V v2.31, but the few negative reviews doesn't give me confidence

CORSAIR Professional Series HX850 (CMPSU-850HX) 850W ATX12V 2.3 / EPS12V 2.91

seems more of a winner to me, but the price does shock me. The rebate is nice if I get it in time.

I finally installed the MSI|R7870 (pictures to follow) into the Stacker and it had no problem swallowing it. So far, no games but a few DiRT3 benches, running on my CORSAIR CMPSU-620HX 620W, and you can barely hear it over my case fans.

I ran a Render.PerfOverlayVisible 1 on the Jet Mission w/ BF3 and my CPU is all over the graph.

I wish I could record it with most current FRAPS, but it affects the graph heavily. Wish there is another BF3 benchmark that I can run and post.

I was kinda upset CompUsa/ TigerDirect would not let me pricematch NewEgg the 850HX, so I lighten up their inventory. I guess, NewEgg wins this round.

Corsair RAM Guy replied to my query and gave me this website.... maybe it should be pinned, its great for calculating your PSU need

here's what it looks so far

Anyhoo, posting pictures just in case someone with a Stacker 830 is wondering if a MSI 7870 would fit

Sweet pics dude (except for the dang popups from imageshack :() Looks like you got plenty of room to spare in your case. My card crushes one of the SATA plugs :wall:

So did you upgrade your PSU? Your sig still says you're running a 620HX.

Corsair 850AX installed

unnecessary cables...gone!

dsc2411z.th.jpgdsc2412o.th.jpg

my only beef, is the SATA cables... since my PSU is coming from the top, the configuration of the SATA connection is backwards, hence, the weird look.

dsc2426.jpg

I thought about reversing the PLASTIC connection, but that seems like a bad idea

I do love how dark the mesh are

dsc2424.jpg

I wish there is a 90degree extension so I can close my case properly....right now, there is tension between the cable and the case fan
