Is Flash really in trouble now?

Recommended Posts

When big guns like Youtube start experimenting with HTML5 in preference over flash, Adobe must be getting worried.

Thing is, it didn't work at all for me LOL, it just sat at a movie loading screen, with the player buttons all messed up.

IE or Chrome required. Not sure why no FF.

Tried it with Chrome.

Upside:

7:00 minute video loaded fully in less then 5 seconds. No pauses for me on my connection which d/l's files at about 78 KB/sec. Normally with flash, it can barely keep up while playing and I can get allot of annoying pauses.

Downside:

Video quality is not as good as flash but acceptable for general viewing.

Tried to check the site using Safari on my iPhone but it gets redirected to the main YouTube page.

I think Adobe may be starting to get a bit worried, but there are so many Flash sites that I don't think they will be obsolete anytime soon.

I wonder if people will forget about M$'s SilverLight though ...

I've not read up at all on how html5 handles video, but as flash is a vector processor it really isn't designed for movies at all, I would have thought HTML5 must be better suited... I need to read more on that though...

Just a subjective opinion on my part.

On some vids, the HTML5 didn't work for me.

Does Youtube encode the videos into FLV for display in flash or are they just pulling the video from the original source?
