Dannik
I'm curious, what's HDR. It's not something I'm familiar with (or maybe it is, and you call it something different). High Dynamic Range. At the most basic level, as it relates to photography, you take three or more shots of the same subject, all with different exposures, and then composite them into a single image. Since underexposure and overexposure capture different details, by blending several shots of differing exposures, you end up with a single image that more accurately reflects what the human eye would see. Papa6
my publishing store front some shots that are in the running for the 2008 national cherry blossom competition. If I can be one of 12 finalists, I will get the 2009 cherry blossom festival calendar and two free round trip tickets where ever southwest airlines flies. here's to hoping! Some of the shots on the website were really nice!

Ahhh... okay. I've heard of that before, just didn't realize it had such a cool fancy name. We did something similar when developing, only instead of the same image, we masked off parts of the paper, and developed completely seperate images in certain areas to make some crazy stuff. It was pretty cool. CPL, Great pics, I like them alot! Especially the guys with the hammock. Gets me excited for visiting my family in Indonesia later on this year. Papa, Good luck! I want a copy if you're in it!

Harelip
Great work. I'm curious, what's HDR. It's not something I'm familiar with (or maybe it is, and you call it something different). It seems to work well for you. Good work! High Dynamic Range Imaging. Google will serve you well on the subject.
Harelip
For a change, here are some non-HDR, 30-second exposure pictures I took last night. Unaltered, apart from resizing and slight cropping. 1, 2, 3,
Guest
nice shots harelip. See, Ruin, HDR would be useful in pic #3, as it would help with the washed out highlights a bit. I usually don't do it much and just meter the bright area just above the light and overexpose by 1stop. You can get some interesting night shots on a cloudy night, sometimes they'll give you a little bit of extra light to work with due to their reflection, as Harelip has demonstrated Tomorrow's the air show! Blue Angels, woot! :'> Edited April 11, 2008 by durka-durka
Ruin
Harelip, another great set of pics. I like #3 the best. I'm not sure about the angle on #1 though. Durka, I see what you mean, but honestly I think it depends on what you're trying to shoot in the photo. For me, the subject would be the bridge arches and the water underneath, not the stone of the bridge, so really the washing out wouldn't be a big deal. I've never done exposures much over 2 seconds (probably because I never had a lens that could really handle it). I'm tempted to give it a try here soon, maybe at the beach this week. I typically do between 5 and 30sec exposures depending on what I'm shooting. You'd be surprised how much sharper everything becomes as well, if you have a steady tripod. Cpl Ledanek
@ Cpl Ledanek. I find the image “Wave.jpg†fascinating, great shot. Can you please explain the story behind the photo. Thanks for checking them out. The Wave was just us in a taxi....stuck in traffic...we see this kid...trying to entertain himself, checking out the traffic, he caught my wife's attention, she decides to wave to him, he waves back with a genuine smile. My favorite is the Gateaway was this kid from across the street who keeps making attempts to get out of the house, except Mom has extra heightened perceptions, she knew he was sneaking out. So I caught that moment he was almost out of the gate.

I guess most of my night photography is purposely under-lit. I like using light to show key and specific things in my pictures. Or to keep only certain subjects in play. I've never really used it to show off a whole scene. ex: I'll play with it some and see what I get. Having a new VR lens will help too. I can also test the theory that VR should be off when on a tripod because of moving parts running the VR. ETA: That photo was an experimental one. I was testing the lighting, but had no tripod and had to go prone and rely on the dock for stability, so it is a tad bit blurry, but it did do what I wanted for exposure. Guest
Some of the 300+ shots I took at the air show this weekend. It was so windy that I still can't feel my face, and the weather that started out beautiful and cold, turned to very cloudy and cold by the time the jets flew. Oh well. We're at a Blue Angels show where the main focus is on aircraft, and the one event that everyone got so excited about was a truck. Go figure, it's Tennessee.... Guest
ZJJ, pretty cool stuff ya got there. I've never been to Winston-Salem, and didn't know what was there. I might have to make a weekend trip now. And Papa, Are you planning on going to that air-show? We had fun, but it wasn't very big or impressive, not many static displays. But I'm guessing Andrews would be fantastic. Old Salem was pretty cool. I wanted to visit the cemetery there, too. It seems they divide up their lives and even graves by sex and age; a very interesting concept. Let me know if you want some links to some possible places of interest. There is a cool SciWorks for kids that we almost went to in order to visit the Planetarium.
