Windows XP Service Pack 3 Released to Manufacturing

Today we are happy to announce that Windows XP Service Pack 3 (SP3) has released to manufacturing (RTM). Windows XP SP3 bits are now working their way through our manufacturing channels to be available to OEM and Enterprise customers.

We are also in the final stages of preparing for release to the web (i.e. you!) on April 29th, via Windows Update and the Microsoft Download Center. Online documentation for Windows XP SP3, such as Microsoft Knowledge Base articles and the Microsoft TechNet Windows XP TechCenter, will be updated then. For customers who use Windows XP at home, Windows XP SP3 Automatic Update distribution for users at home will begin in early summer.

Thanks to everyone here who installed the public betas – you not only gave us detailed feedback but also helped each other out with timely troubleshooting. Through the beta program we found several important issues and were able to confirm some essential fixes. We couldn’t have done this without you.

We will still be monitoring this forum during the next few weeks in case you have more feedback about the release of Windows XP SP3.

On behalf of myself, Shashank Bansal and Windows Serviceability, many thanks.

Haven't been able to find it on the Microsoft site(s) yet but this site links to the Microsoft download center:

A note of warning: reportedly Microsoft found a last minute glitch. See the comment "not yet" at the bottom of the linked site.

Not sure that will affect any of us in here though.

Well, the SP3 launch sure was anti-climactic with MS finding that last minute glitch. I've downloaded a copy of it yet but not used it as I just haven't had time to do any reformating.

Anyone here use SP3 yet?

I wonder if after they fix the glitch if they will they call it SP3a or what?

Hard to tell, it was installed on a cleaned and defragged, but not reformated HDD w/fresh XP. I haven't been able to notice any increase or decrease in performance, have not had any conflicts in any programs/drivers, and the system runs same as before.

Load up from boot is marginally longer, but this is more than likely due to my new dual-boot config, which was done the same day I applied SP3.

The relevant \windows\$NT*Uninstall*$ directories were left behind...is SP3 a code re-write or just a glorified .cab file?

Wow, the above link was really busy this weekend. I had to wait a long time for that page to load

Also, SP3 is starting to show up as an option for XP auto-updates

Anyways, I downloaded the full install .exe and installed it on a two computers that I regularly maintain for other people, and installation went fine, and no obv. performance probs/driver issues etc.

I think the security updates in SP3 (that are not otherwise available in the auto-update patches) are pretty small improvements, and won't be obvious to most folks

I installed it for a few customers. Just more or less seemed to be all the updates rolled up. I see IE7 is also in it, which the beta didn't have and could mess a not patched computer up.

Actually, SP3 does not install IE7. I really wish it did. (Also wish SP3 would have auto-installed WMP11 and updated DX9c)

From what I have read, SP3 has patches for both IE6 and IE7, so if you are still running IE6, it will patch your IE6. If you have upgraded to IE7, it will patch your IE7, but it will not install IE7.
