GRAW2 on the PS3 with a mouse and 1st person option

I have never owned a console until this christmas. I was gifted both a Wii and a PS3.

The Wii is fun.

The PS3 looks amazing on my 1080P TV, but lets face it PC lovers (of which I am one). Those games and their darn controller just don't cut it for us hardened "PC Only" types.....

Then I did a little research and learned 2 things.

The PS3 version of GRAW2 will include a feature that allows you to switch from Third to First person just like the XBOX360 version has . Hmm. OK. So what? I still have to hold that darn controller thigamajig and every one knows you cant aim for dung with that thing.

Aside from design decisions and limited resources inhenrent in console hardware (previous gen) the controller has been the biggest thing holding back the console for many people. I personally chose NOT to play FPS's on a console primarily because I don't like the control scheme for them. (Also the design on most of them from the previous gen left much to be desired as well).

If this takes off for the PS3 then hopefully they will pull it over to the Xbox and maybe then with the current capabilities, we can start to see more dynamic and interesting designed FPS games that actually can play more like a PC game. If that happens I might consider playing more console FPS's.

Speaking of Wii (sorry for the OT). I've begun to get bored with mine. I there are actually very few titles that take advantage of the controller besides the relatively small # of first party Nintendo titles. The other 3rd party controllers just seem to slap some kind of motion to replace a button from another platform rather than make it really feel genuine and at home on the Wii. Otherwise, it's no different from an Xbox/PS3 game with poor graphics. At this point, I am mainly using it for playing gamecube games that I can buy super cheap. It's kind of sad really. I sincerely hope to see some intersting titles that really take some advantage of the control scheme rather than ports that weakly attempt to use it.

I'd get a 360 if I could plug in a mouse & KB. Well, a mouse, KB, and surf the internet. Then I'd get a 360. That's it. Period. If only I would use a mouse, KB, internet, and printer. A mouse, KB, internet, printer, and a scanner. Then, I'm 360 all the way. Faxing would be nice...A mouse, KB, surf the internet, print, scan, fax. Then, 360 would be it for me. Yep, just a mouse, KB, internet, print, scan, fax, and word processing. Yep. If only. If only I could get a mouse, KB, surf the internet, print, scan, fax, word processing, and spreadsheets. That's all I'd need to get a 360. All I'd need....alllll I'd need........and create & edit videos....mouse, KB, internet, print, scan, fax, word processing, spreadsheets, and video editing/creating.

Store & transfer music...and data...and upgradable....

On the PS3 issue, I'm glad you see the potential here. I was concerend after re reading my first post, I would get a reply like "GRAW2 Console version sux" or some such thing. My post wasnt really about GRAW2 PC so much as it was about the movement toward Mouse and KB that Sony is now openely sanctioning. The MS bunch has openly stated they will not allow mouse and KB as a controller and this has lead, possibly, to Sony deciding to seperate themselves from the XBOX further by allowing it. In fact, as I understand it, they provided the specs to Splitfish to ensure that the design was fully compatible. This is very good news indeed. it means that as we enter the next year of PS3 development, and once the user base starts getting into the double-digit millions as expected, the tac-sim developers might actually try to start developing realistic tac-sims for the PS3.

On the note of XBOX 360, even though it is not formally sanctioned by MS, a company has built a system that allows KB and mouse on the XBOX360 in direct defiance of MS and it emulates the controller (tricks the 360 into thinking a controller is atached. Here is that link....

So slowly and quietly, this whole "We wanna FPS like on our PC" thing is starting to open up. I think certain devs like Blackfoot studios and GRiN will (Should?) look very closely at these possabilities so that they can stay in the Genre they love while grabbing tons more sales becuase they can now give the players a mouse.

There was a similar device for the xbox that did the same thing. However it was sluggish and didn't do what the FRAGFX does in regards to mouse speed. From my understanding it emulated the analog stick only at one speed and didn't correlate the speed of the mouse with the amount of analog "lean" resulting in a one speed very sluggish response. From reading what the FragFX does it's going to be very much like a PC mouse - even a on the fly dpi adjustable mouse and not hampered by the analog stick "emulation". This will go MILES towards serious FPS gamers adopting it and was the biggest draw back to the xbox attempt.

If Sony pulls this off and Microsoft does not respond similarly, then Sony will be poised to be the console of choice for the non-halo serious FPS player. Microsoft will be on the short end of the stick with having to do something in hardware to address it to make it backward compatible with existing games- if at all. If not the PS3 will be the most likely system to pull cross-over die hard PC fans- if they can make the right games.

With any luck i will have my FragFX tomorrow. Im hoping this works out well because i just cant handle playing FPS on consoles with the standard controller. I know a few peeps who have gotten the FragFX and love it. They say its just like a PC mouse with a few added extra features.

I miss playing on my PC but this controller will give me that back atleast to a certain degree...lol Im looking forward to GRAW 2 on the PS3 but because its being ported over im nervous about it losing stuff along the way.

I'm glad you returned to this post to brwath some new life into it. I am getting ready to make my purchase of Splitfish's product myself.

Are you getting the wired version or has the wireless version finally become available? I was holding out for the wireless version. I hope you will come back in here and post a throrough review of how it works and feels etc.

On the question of GRAW2 post to PC, I cannot say. Vegas is also out for PS3. Another option.

But many PS# FPS's that are going to be native to the PS3 are under development and I am guessing that many of them will look and feel amazing. Have you been following the videos comning our of E3 since yesterday at Gametrailers.com? Go check out hte game play videos on Killzone and COD4 and a few others.

I dont think any of them are tac sims like GRAW2PC (This includes GRAW2 PS3). But this is a good sign for PS3/console owners who prefer the PC style of control. We will see where this goes over the coming year or 2.

Hi man,

Im still waiting on my FragFX. There have been a few problems with stores keeping them in stock..hehe As soon as i get mine i will come post a review. Right now im mainly playing RB6 on the PS3. I love the game but wish it had better buddy and clan support. Maybe it will be patched in...lol

Im getting the wired version but thats only because i dont wanna wait for the wireless...hehe I think the wireless is the better choice if you can hold out for it. I have talked to and played with a couple people that have used this thing (The Splitfish clan). This thing is a PC gamers dream come true. It makes for amazing headshots. The ability to max out the sensitivity and still keep control over it makes it very awesome.

With any luck i should have mine by the end of the week and will write a review here asap. Also take note that EB games has them currently available on their websites so anyone interested in a wired version should be able to pick one up.

Ok,

I received my FragFX earlier today. I played with it for about 4 to 5 hours and have some info to share.

Comfort: The controller is easy to get use to using as per positioning of fingers on the buttons and so on. I didn't have too much confusion hitting the wrong button.

Usage: In general the controller is fun and easy to use. The on the fly sensitivity adjustment is sweet and seems to work just as one would imagine. The left hand dongle seems pretty comfortable (odd at first but very easy to get use to) I didn't really use the frag button in gameplay but it definitely slows things down when pushed.

There are a few issues i would like to see improved upon in future production though. The left and right mouse buttons travel in a straight down fashion. This wouldn't be much of an issue but if you put your finger fully on it like you would a normal mouse then push down it doesn't seem to respond as good as if you put your fingertip on top of the button and push straight down.

Then again i think this could be easily fixed if they made those buttons respond quicker. Right now they respond near the bottom of the button travel. If they were to make them so the buttons responded with very little button travel then the above issue with downward movement wouldn't matter.

The other buttons sensitivity could be adjusted alittle to make them more sensitive also but that might be able to be done with the firmware update.

Ok, Now the only other thing i can think of that seems a bit weird to me is that when i move the mouse slow it seems to be a touch jumpy but that might be just a matter of getting the ingame and controller sensitivity adjustments correct for my liking. Then again its probably just picking up the small jerkiness of my hand movement.

Now you may say this sounds like alot of problems but to me its nothing i cant get use to. In the time i spent playing with it i saw myself improving and adjusting to the FragFX controls. I know i will do better with this controller after i have practiced and mastered it.

I give this controller a great rating because it really does do what is expected of a mouse controller. My issues are probably just my own opinion and not really product flaw. I guarantee i will adjust to the things i mentioned as flaws and it will become non existent to me. Just as a pretty hardcore PC gamer i became pretty picky on response time of button pushes and so on..lol

Ok, I have some news to report. All the issues i spoke of that have to do with the buttons not being sensitive are going to be addressed with a firmware update from SplitFish. It will make it so you can change the button layout and adjust every buttons sensitivity level individualy. This is very good news because i like my buttons sensitive to the touch...lol

I still havent played the retail edition of GRAW2 for PC yet

I was dispointed with the Demo not supporting coop like the GRAW1 Demo supported coop.

I downloaded a trailer ( graw2ps3_devdiary_music.wmv )

that was a dev dairy for the PS3 and the consoles still have what I find the WRONG

focus on gaming . The trailer was going on about the impact of music now is important

for gaming aswell , well no thats not true for the real gamers . Yes Sound is important

but if your getting shot , things are happening , aircraft buzzing the last thing you need

is a sound track to make it harder to hear important things in the game .

You see it a lot in online FPS gaming for the PC , people have effects on half

music on full then get slaughtered and dont use sound to help them

work out were people are instead rely on visual only .

Personaly 3rd shooters on the console should all become FPS shooters

ALL FPS shooters on console SHOULD NATIVLY support Keyboard and Mouse

All current Consoles should come out with a PS2/USB adapter to support

Keyboard and mouse right now to fix dumbed down auto aim joy contoller gaming

keyboard and mice . Keyboards and mice have been around as long as tvout and ram.

Cross platform gaming has been a let down , it was be great if you could have a lan party

with pc gamers (Windows and Linux) , Mac gamers , console gamers (PS2/PS3/Xbox1/Xbox360)

all in the SAME game together fighting each other .

Then again the computer gamers would win since you get a better control method using

keyboard and mouse .

I know of a lot of people asking questions about the PS3/WII/Xbox360 and the common

thing is , can I use a keyboard and mouse for RTS/FPS games on the console

and play online with pc gamers . OFten I recommend instead to those people

to get a Shuttle pc or build a small miniatx box that connects to the tv for gaming

instead and they end up with better value

The clue to the "decent reason" lies in the fact that the XBOX360 has been around 1 year longer than the PS3, and yet the PS3 allowed mouse support first. Don't you find that odd?

It is not in MS's best interest to migrate PC gamers to the consle. PC gamers buy very expensive PCs and they buy very expensive MS software, including the Operating System, to have that PC.

Sony does not have a operating system or MS Office product to support.

When MS makes their xbox(360) feel like a PC for PC gaming, they "Shift" customers away from PCs. This is not a net revenue gain. When Sony makes a PS3 feel like a PC, they "Take" customers". This **IS** a net revenue gain.

These market shifts are not inconsequential. Look how many PS3s are supposed to be in the market place in the next few years. I believe recent estimates were 70 million. If the mouse revolution on the PS3 side takes hold, 20 million of those 70 million could be PC gamers who finally migrated. That would repersent a huge loss to MS and a huge gain for Sony.

There is your first "decent reason". :)

Not very surprising at all seeing that Sony had an official Linux pack with mouse, keyboard, LAN converter, HD and output to RGB monitor for the PS2...

Did you know that GRAW2 for the PS3 just released a demo for the PS3 a couple of days ago?

(I know you guys didn't make it)

But with my new mouse, I'm at least gonna give the demo a try and see if coop would be cool ....

I got my PS3 over christmas ... :santa:

Also, as far as I know, the mouse and keyboard that went with the PS2 (and the wireless keyboard already available for the PS3) does not allow you to play games with them. Just manage text and "mouse based software" like linux applications ...

But the mouse you see imaged in this thread plays in games. and it behaves like a PC mouse. not like a analog stick on a mouse. It's sweet ...

Nah! Long time PlayStation owner. Got the PSX when first week it came out and been buying Sony since (besides my DS). :) Still playing on the PS2 today. Just so many great RPG coming to it still that no other console on the marker can match. Sales figures in the US for the ENTIRE spring was, #1 Nintendo DS, #2 PlayStation 2! Funny facts.

I never have been against consoles. Just don't like shooters too much on them. For action/platform games it really good. The right tool for the right job and all that. ;)

Still not enough buttons. It's like flight sims on consoles. Don't work unless you have 50 buttons or they turn the game into some arcade thing so you can't do everything.

FlightSims seem to have a huge amount of controls needed .

I am suprised no one has released an Flight Sim Pannel Pad that looks like a real Aircraft pannel

to connect to an Computer/console with all the buttons , dials , gizmos it needs . Untaped market !

Hardcore Sim players do get Steering Wheels or Flight joysticks to control the game along with

extra buttons on the computers keyboard.

The only consoles I have ever bought was the ATARI 2600 (Around 1984/1994)

and PSX1 (Playstation 1) in 2004 . They still dont appeal to me as much as a normal computer

Not long after using the ATARI 2600 console I moved onto the my first computer

Amstrad CPC664 (z80 based computer 128k ram , 3 INCH drive (not 3.5") , tape

and green screen . After that was an Amiga 500 with hdd addon .

Lots of Single player gaming with a joystick (the same one that came with the Atari 2600

actually , damm it was tough and well built) up until the release of coop LAN and LAN

multiplayer gaming for x86 computers using DOS and IPX

Then in 1995 I bought my own x86 computer (Intel 486 sx25 4MB RAM , 512 video card

10 base coax network card . 20 gig RRL drive and RRL controller ) This is when I stoped

using a joystick on the computer and started to use a mouse for gaming instead (quake 1

added mouse advantage for gamers not so much compared to duke3d/doom1-2)

Personaly the consoles went down the tube around 2000 , this is were it would of been

an ideal time to introduce KEYBOARD and MOUSE SUPPORT NATIVE in consoles

Even PC games started to go CRAP around 2000 , more focus on REALISTIC and

GRAPHICS over real gameplay features .

After 2000 was also the begging of games using DirectX instead of Glide and Opengl

and introduced gamers to incompete games that needs patchs AFTER THE game

was released .

All the games getting ported from one system to another cant be good for the game

and you see the results with GTA/NFS/GR/R6 series as a result of multi console ports .

In the end I doubt older (not age but the period of a person playing games for) gamers

will support consoles for FPS/RTS/RPGs as none of the consoles support Keyboard and Mouse

sure the PS3 and WII have these workaround mice devices but why pay for one of those

when the user/gamer should be able to use a stock mouse that normaly connects to a pc

Consoles seem to be about NEW gamers that havent played a game pre 2000

or that much skill when it comes to PC gaming

Negative. Socom and GRAW2 have proven that FPS do not need any more buttons (and button combinations ...hold vs tap etc) than exist on a controller. Peeking, changing fire mode, etc. Its all there. A keyboard is not required to make a serious FPS like GRAW PC on a console. Just a better controller.

Now flight sims like Falcon? yea. not enough. A WW2 sim? maybe.

I was thinking more along the lines of Jane's Longbow, F15 of F/A18 games, all favorites of mine. But Falcon is pretty advanced as well.

But now I think I went off topic. :P

Oh how i miss Longbow2!! I dream every day of some one making a serious, Front seat/back seat coop longbow like game. I'm a huge rotor head. I fly the heli's in flightsimX and the helis in ArmA all the time. Some nights, I'll spend hours on the tacticalgamer.com ARMA server just flying dedicated transport to the squads in harms way. I'll never shoot a bullet. Just little bird and blackhawk insertions and extractions. I love helis. Nothing, and I mean nothing, has ever come close to replacing Longbow2 though. DLZs, hellfires, infrared sensirs ... God I'm sad ...

I yearn for the next great serious combat helicopter sim...

PS3 can use USB-KB and Mouse but Sony provide no Interface to them, so Games can use them - did i get the Point?

Or was this Possebility even not known while Production of GRAW 2?

I thought that PS3-Games will changing to use that Periphery :(
