unwritt3n
In mission 1, when u land from the halo insertion and u go through that little tutorial kinda thing. You will hear Lewie say this when he's talking about reloading your weapon (not exact words): "Nothing worse then pulling the trigger and hearing click!" So i decided to turn of auto-reload, and hear this clicking sound he was talking about.. and guess wat.. there is none. LOL! Everyone give it a shot, just to confirm its just not my system, but when i got an empty mag and i click the fire button, i dont hear any clicking sound... just silence. specs: AMD Athlon 64 3200+ 256MB 7800GTX Extreme 2GB Corsair RAM 240GB SATA in RAID 0 SB Audigy 2 ZS Running sound in 5.1 through Logitech 550W RMS Z5300e 5.1 Speakers. GRiN_desmond22
Yeah the sound is in the game, it's just not called for by the weapon scripts. We'll fix it in an upcoming patch. Hopefully untiul then, you'll be able to undertand that you're out of ammo by the fact that you don't hear BANG when you pull the trigger... Joseph_Q
Funny thing, i noticed lack of this sound yesterday when i turned of autoreload I was killed by nade to many times because autoreload started reloading animation when i was trying to run away from striking range By the way ... I think we should be able to stop reloading underway. What do You think about that Desmond ?

Hopefully untiul then, you'll be able to undertand that you're out of ammo by the fact that you don't hear BANG when you pull the trigger... there should not be a click on most weapons. since when you run out the bolt will be hung back by the catch forced up by the empty magazine. the trigger will not be able to be pulled and the hammer will not be able to hit the pin. thus no 'click'. i think the mp5 should maybe have 1 click because to my knowledge (judging by my experience shooting the mp5k) it does not have a catch mechanism that holds the bolt back so you should have a trigger pull but only one since the bolt will not recock the hammer since no round was chambered to make it move. anyways what i'm saying is please research this for the individual weapon. and don't blindly put in a 'gimmickey' click. No problem at all, thanks for clearing it up tho. I really thought it was just some mis-configuration on my 5.1 setup. You do too much GRIN I know this somewhat off topic, but how do you know his name is Lewie? Does he say it or is there some documentation? I've wondered about who the dude with the accent is. As soon as you hit the dirt from the halo insertion, you here him say "Mornin Mitchel, it's Lewie" or something like that... ...yes, ive done the halo insertion about 5000000000 times now i think, going for 5000000001 now. Tortfeaser
The weapon platform designed by Gene Stoner does not produce a "click" when run dry. When the last brass is ejected from the chamber, the magazine catch holds the bolt open. The next time you pull the trigger all you hear (feel really) is the trigger engaging the sear, but the "hammer" does not fall. It makes an audible metal on metal sound, but after firing a few hundred rounds with no hearing protection, you cannot hear it. all I can hear is my own voice sayng something like, "Damn." I believe on a weapon that fires with a open bolt, like the old .45 grease gun, you may hear a click. It has been 18 years since I fired one as a brand new Cavalry troop, and frankly, I don't remember. When making a game, you always have to balance realism vs gameplay indication. I'm not for throwing in a lot of "gimmickey" things just because Hollywood has made everybody believe that's how "it is", but if something is widely perceived as realistic and at the same time would fill a useful function in the game (the way a "click" sound indicates that you're out of ammo) I'm all for it. Exactly, as much as realism is preffered, something like shooting a firearm is a unique experience, you 'feel' the trigger, you 'feel' the recoil through your body, the muzzle flash, the sound hits you, etc. When you run out of rounds in RL, you know it, a thousand clues and signals tell you this. This cannot be replicated through a mouse and monitor so I personally welcome a clue such as an audible click. It's a fair trade off for all those tactile signals that are missing. You should read some books about the SAS, there are plenty about and they are realistic, about tactics, weapon use and so on. American writers tend to have big words about used weapons and will overdo their comments in order to sound superior. The books by Cris Ryan, Cameron Spence and Andy mc Nab will tell you about tactical retreats, running out of ammo and encountering something different than stated in mission briefings. I miss GR1's mission briefings, the would tell you better what youre up against..... And it would be nice that you really feel in urban combat. It is strange to have no civilians around, that you have to avoid. (ok is extra heavy in AI I know) It would be nice allso that when youre in mission you sometimes encounter large areas emty, no enemy so when you encounter enemy's again the shock is greater (lone sniper) I have the feeling GR1 was more realistic in that way (and all those car wrecks, fencing in odd places, nice for gameplay Mp but not real enough in my opinion) You did a good job on GRAW but there's enough to improve, I really hope Ubi and Grin will commit themselves to making the better Tactical shooters for PC, I refuse to play any other shooters or on playstation/x-box/..... When it happens the hud showing my weapon flashes red at the same time the clicking noise happens.

Desmond, the way you did the "out of ammo" sound is in my opinion realistic and should be left alone. Last week I was in Prague and I passed some time at a shooting range. You do not hear or even feel a click when you are out of ammo. This goes for pistols (not revolvers) and assault rifles. For example when you fire your last round from an M4, what you feel is that the trigger can not be pressed. The gun just suddenly feels like dead metal in your hands. You don't feel recoil or hear a "bang" is exactly what the experience is like. Asking for clicking sounds when you pull the trigger of your gun that has just shot its last round is ridiculous. Unless you want an arcade feeling. silent_op Edited June 15, 2006 by silent_op

Explain to me how you would translate For example when you fire your last round from an M4, what you feel is that the trigger can not be pressed. The gun just suddenly feels like dead metal in your hands. into the game. Stop people being able to click their left mouse button? As much as realism is a worthy goal, gameplay choices, and the enjoyment of the gamer is the ultimate driving force. When something is impossible to translate into the game then a workaround has to be made and if a 'Click' when empty sound would improve the game for even 50% of the GR:AW players then it is worth considering as tbh, you guy's that count your rounds or use the HUD indicator won't ever hear it will you
GRiN_desmond22
My opinion agrees with Dai-San's - there indications you receive in reality that cannot be incorporated in a game, and to make up for this these have to be replaced by other indications - through the HUD or with the help of audio. silent_op
The point of my previous post is simple. I think GRIN or rather Desmond, translated the impression of realism of the last round fired from your weapon accurately. I guess we can always mod the clicking out, if need be. Remove or comment out any "empty weapon clicking" sound files. Then we're all happy in the end. silent_op Edited June 15, 2006 by silent_op
