=sealz=Agentorange
Well embassy would be nice if they "revamped" it. Like made more building enterable for us to snipe from. set up some of them vulcans around in windows some fire escapes to snipe from. It would rock. ruggbutt
There weren't alot of places to do proper sniping on Embassy, at least none that would allow you to stay alive in. Most of the shots were closer ranged and required standing or kneeling, and if you do so w/FarCry your ret bobs and weaves unless you're prone. effin_GITS
I finally got to try Tank out in FarCry. It certainly rocks and proved that a FC mod has so much potential to be a GR2 killer. Apart from Soroc's and Ruggbutt's input we don't really know what part of the GR mod community is going to commit to any work on a conversion other than reproducing maps. It would be good to hear something from them. I loved the map. Most of the things FC brings to a new GR experience seem positive though there are some things i'm not too keen on. I'd like to start a thread dedicated to discussing the elements of a FC GR mod that you guys out there would like to keep/change/add/take out etc. I'll start that thread. My initial thoughts though was that the colour scheme on the tank map was a little too garish and cartoony., Tank GR may be old but I still like it's gritty look. Also for some reason the massive boulders made the map feel so small, well i noticed that the 'no fog' mod on GR makes the map seem much smaller so maybe it was the ace draw distance. I'm not a fan of simulated scope drift. I reckon having to keep a steady hand on the mouse pretty much equalizes things for all so i'd rather not have some program telling me that i can't hold a gun steady even if the effect is realisitc. I also don't like the reduced mouse sensitivity every time i switch to scope view. On the one hand the program is forcing my scope to drift and at the same time it's de exaggerating my hand movements as it would seem when zoomed in. Well, don't think i'm bitching as there is a million things to be excited about in sorocs excellent job of converting Tank. I hope other Reconers are as excited aboout the possibility of playing GR on FC as i am. Effin.
Suli
a forum will be produced in time where we can all come together. mostly things have been discussed via voice atm, and it does make a lot of choices easier since we are all really coming from the same place. Currently we are working on some server side stuff. we have a loose mental list of those involved and it will be more than a few conversion maps. even though FC is very modable there are still a lot of changes to be made, and a lot of stuff to be finalised first. there is a slight pause ( not really a pause as we are still able to make stuff ) as we await the sdk, currently a far cry community member has made an importer for static models, but we still await other model import abilities. we certainly look forward to community imput, we all for the most part like the same style of gameplay so it gives us a good start. Rugg will keep every one informed as to the progress.
ruggbutt
What version did you get of Tank, effin? The 1.7 version is the final release and the colors are not even close to being cartoony.
effin_GITS
I have the 1.7 version. Maybe it's just my opinion. I tried it on cold and thought it more realistic that way but then again it just feels like i've turned down the colour to almost black and white. I don't think it's that map in particular. I think Far Cry was designed to be bright and cheerful in it's colour scheme. There are two things I notice about Far Cry that are a little odd to me. One is the colour scheme seems very . . primary or overly bright. perhaps lacking in grades of the same colour. it almost seems like the objects, especially foliage is glowing to me. The other thing is that similar to both UT2003/4 and Quake 3 (and its mods) all the objects seem very 'fat'. Half Life is a much older engine yet mods such as CS and Day of defeat, despite looking aged now, seem to be able to create slim objects. I'm not technical so don't really know how to express this. There is just a chunky aspect to all the objects in the above games/mods and Far Cry also. Because of these two things Far Cry feels so much like a console game. I really enjoyed the single player campagn but definitly on a console level. This and the far Cry simplistic weapons make it so. Im just wondering if the SDK will allow the modders to get around that and give the mods the hard edge that pc games seem to have? As a side note. I've been keeping an eye on 'Stalker' as a possible route for a GR type military mod. I donn't know much about what the net code will be like but I just downloaded a 300 or so meg movie of it from fileplanet. It's a new one and splits into 4 quick time demos of mostly game play. Holy sheeeeeeet that game looks ace. It's like a soviet version of Half Life. Very creepy and ace graphics, physics and AI. And guess what . . i'm happy with the worn out look of the colour scheme. Anyway, I played a 'ahem' beta of an unpopulated level. The gravity was set wrong so i bounced around like i was on the moon but i could use the weapons and check out miles and miles of countryside and believe me it's freaking B E A ootiful. The weapons look weird and ace too. Anyway Far Cry will be a great engine for a GR mod but from what i've seen and played of Stalker the colour scheme is perfect and the objects are anorxic slim baby yeah. Soroc
Part of the reason for the color saturation is that I was not fully aware of the affect of the "ambient color" under the environment settings when I released 1.7. With that changed, the map renders in a less saturated fashion. That is really the problem...all of the colors are heavily over-saturated, and the ambient color is causing much of that effect. In fact, in the night version of the map, before I changed the ambient color, the rocks still glowed in a warm gold color in a night environment! That's how much effect it has. There will be a final release once we determine the source of the memory leak that appears in about 50% of the custom maps. We are testing right now. I will also have the ambient color toned down at that time also. Edited June 30, 2004 by Soroc
effin_GITS
Soroc it's such a beautiful conversion that I almost feel sorry to be posting about that subject. I don't mean it as a complaint. Ironic though that I talked about it even though i'm a little colour blind. I have another question and i'm sorry guys to be hogging the thread. The foliage dissapears as you put distance between you and it. When you zoom in again with bino's and the sniper scope it re draws it. Will this then negate the benifit of using shub for cover? Most of the long grass in GR is constant so you can bet if it's obscuring your view it is also hiding you. Of course if you are laying in some foliage and a guy looks at you with the scope the game engine will again draw it around you. If he is just far enough away for the foliage to be 'un drawn' from his natural line of sight does that mean that you will suddenly be reveled to him as a distant figure laying in the open? I'll be happy to download future maps or versions of Tank Soroc and give them a good going over with feedback.
Soroc
Your question is a good one, and a tuning issue. The fadeout or "sprite" usage distance on the foliage is controllable. It remains to be seen what the appropriate distance is. I may go look at the stock maps as a reference. In any case, it's just another setting that we can control in the map-building process. compufobia
This looks great, as an old GR and FC player this project really excites me, What I would most like to see is the levels get the co-op treatment, my clans fav mode of play for GR. and ity wouldnt even have to include the missions really just fire fight mode like. Soroc
Lag issues in the mapcycle necessitated a version 2 to resolve them. Get it here: mp_tank v2.0 ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Version 2.0 - Mapcycle Lag Issue Resolved ------------------------------------------------- Fixes include: Creating new maps from scratch seems to cause a lag issue on the map following the custom one. Redid the map entirely on a production Crytek map (mp_airstrip). This resolved the mapcycle lag issue. The map is now two kilometers across instead of 512 meters. This allowed for nice edgework, making the mountains more realistic. It also allowed for a larger play area. Look around. Adjusted textures for better coloration. Normal rendering mode is now preferred. Vegetation completely redone. Sprite usage adjusted on the grass...looks better. Lag by second ammo pickup (by the big truck) fixed. Other minor changes. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Here's some pictures. The first three show the actual environmental settings, while the fourth and fifth have the fog removed to better see parts of the map. About half the map shown here.
