OS for gaming rig?

Recommended Posts

What would be the best operating system for building a new gaming rig.

I am no pc guru but I am going to put my tax return to good use.

I already have a decent video card to temporarly hold me over for a bit...GF2 mx400...the mobo I plan on getting will have agp slot for video card upgrade later.

My curent sound card I plan on using for now is a recently bought SB Live 5.1

What I am looking at right now is to start is a Asus ATX 533 mhz mobo....

intel p4 2.4 ghz processor.......for sure a 7200 rpm hard drive " but unsure on model......at least 512 DIMM to start.....

Also not sure on the case and power supply.....

Any help will be appreciated.

Go with XP. It's the current OS that is getting all the support and updates, and any future software will be geared mainly toward it until MS releases a new OS.

XP pro, xp home, xp office?

My wife and some friends of mine have pro and like it. Probably worth it to spring for it over home. XP office isn't an OS, it's a bundle of productivity software (Word, Excel, Access, etc.).

If you want more extensive networking options and some additional administration tools, go for Pro. It's only $30 more (or was when I got mine). Otherwise go ahead and get Home.
